From Jan 28th to Feb 3rd, the students of St. John the Baptist Catholic School were "United in Faith and Community" for Catholic Schools Week. The kick off started on Friday the 26th with a mini pep rally including our school band.
Monday, our students came together in buddy classes to spend some time reflecting on their catholic education. They created crosses showing how they serve, lead, succeed and learn. At the end everyone was treated to a snack while they were dressed up in their favorite sport or team.
On Tuesday, everyone came dressed up in their PJ's to enjoy the morning of reading in the gym followed by popcorn. We headed back to the gym on Wednesday to play pin knock down. The students were broken into multi age groups with each teacher in charge of one group. It was fun to watch the teams go back and forth throwing the balls trying to get the 6 bowling pins knocked down. The ultimate victory was Mrs. Jacobson's team!
SJB was full of class clones on Thursday. We saw puppy dogs, zoo animals, and football players. The hallways were buzzing wondering what teacher was going to be in the classroom after lunch for the teacher swap. Some teachers had a little more adjustment than others in the swap, such as Ms. Beckman heading up to 6th grade and Mrs. Olson heading down to first grade. Before the day was over, our 6-8 grade students loaded up to play bingo at a local nursing home. There were even some winners among our students.
Once Friday rolled around, the students created a rainbow of colors as each class had chosen a color to wear. To see the reds, blues and yellows during mass where we celebrated the "Presentation of Jesus" or Candlemas. Fr. Jorge told us about the importance of the light from the candles after he blessed the Baptistmal candle. Then we passed the light from one person to another until the whole church was lit from the flames.
We returned to church once more to pray a living rosary together. Each student or buddy group was one bead on a rosary. To watch as each student stood for their prayer and to stay the prayers as a school community was inspiring. Finally we mixed up recess and lunch before heading for an afternoon of skating!
